Why Are Regular Dental Visits Important?

Every six months it is a good idea to see a dentist and have a routine checkup or cleaning. There are several benefits from seeing the dentist every year. Here, Medical Arts Dentistry highlights a few of the benefits to having regular dental check ups.

Plaque, Cavities, Tartar

Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up on teeth and if not removed erodes the enamel forming cavities (decay) in your teeth. Sensitivity and tooth aches develop as bacteria causes changes to the enamel and decay occurs. Untreated tooth decay may lead to severe pain, infection, costly restorative treatments or tooth loss. Regular dental exams and x-rays can help catch enamel changes before cavities have progressed.

Even after a few hours the plaque can begin to solidify (mineralize) making it more difficult to remove. These hard deposits, known as calculus or tartar, may lead to gum infection and bone loss. Maintaining regular dental cleaning appointments every six months allows the dental hygienist the opportunity to remove these difficult deposits and to monitor gum and bone health.

Gum Disease (Gingivitis and Periodontitis)

Early stages of gum disease result in red, bleeding and swollen gums. The inflammation, gingivitis, caused by plaque and bacteria may become quite painful. Gingivitis may progress to periodontitis which is destruction of the supporting structures and bone around the teeth. Signs and symptoms of periodontitis include inflammation, pus, recession, loose teeth, spacing, pain on chewing and may ultimately lead to tooth loss. Periodontal disease is largely preventable with good oral hygiene and routine dental visits.

Oral Pathology Screening

During a check-up, a dentist will screen for signs of oral diseases in a patient’s mouth. The dentist performs a clinical evaluation to screen for tissue changes and tumors. The dentist may check your lymph nodes, neck and jaws for swelling, lumps, deformities and any other signs of oral pathology including oral cancer. Routine screening is important because undetected changes may develop into a life-threatening illness. These screenings are painless and only take a minute or two. They have been shown to reduce the risk of undiagnosed oral disease in patients.
